Some faces just look clean. Not made-up, not filtered, just calm and comfortable in their own skin. It is rarely a twelve-step routine. More often it is one simple habit, done every day, with an ingredient that has been trusted for a very long time.
For us, that ingredient has a name many people have forgotten: Warss.
What is Warss? The short answer
Warss (also spelled Waras, Wars or Wurus, and written ورس in Arabic and Urdu) is a red-orange resinous powder collected from the pods of Flemingia plants. For centuries it has been used in Arabia, Yemen, East Africa and India as a natural dye and cosmetic. A narration in Sunan Abi Dawud 311 reports that women in the time of the Prophet ﷺ applied warss to their faces. Our Warss® range, the Facial Soap, Facial Oil and Aloe Vera Gel, is a Sunnah-inspired daily skincare routine. These are cosmetic products, not treatments.

What Is Warss?
Warss is a natural plant ingredient with a long history. It is not the plant's leaf or root. It is the fine, sticky, red-orange powder found on the outside of the seed pods of certain Flemingia shrubs, which is rubbed off the dried pods and collected. The main source is Flemingia grahamiana, a plant found from Yemen and East Africa to southern India, with Flemingia macrophylla as another source.
In Yemen the plant has been grown since ancient times, and Warss has long been exported across Arabia. The powder gives a golden-orange colour, which is why it was used to dye silk and cotton, and why it also found its way into traditional cosmetics.
| Common names | Warss, Waras, Wars, Wurus, Varas |
| In other scripts | ورس (Arabic, Urdu) · वर्स (Hindi) |
| Source plants | Flemingia grahamiana and Flemingia macrophylla (family Fabaceae) |
| Part used | Fine resinous powder rubbed from the dried seed pods |
| Appearance | Red, orange-brown to purple-brown powder |
| Regions | Yemen and the Arabian Peninsula, East Africa, India |
| Traditional uses | Natural dye for silk and cotton; cosmetic in Arabia |
| Mentioned in the Sunnah | Yes (Abu Dawud 311, Tirmidhi 139, Ibn Majah 648) |
One small clarification: Warss is often confused with kamala, another orange-red dye powder from a different plant. They look alike, but they are not the same ingredient.
Warss in the Sunnah
Warss appears in a well-known narration reported by Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), one of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ.
Sunan Abi Dawud 311 · narrated by Umm Salamah
Umm Salamah reported that, in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, women would wait forty days after childbirth, and that they used to apply warss to their faces because of kalaf, the Arabic word for facial discolouration such as freckles or dark spots.
Grade: Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani). The same report is in Jami' at-Tirmidhi 139 and Sunan Ibn Majah 648. Read on sunnah.com
What does this tell us? It tells us that warss was a familiar, everyday facial cosmetic in the Prophet's ﷺ time. That is the history, and it is the reason we call our range Sunnah-inspired. It is a historical report, not a promise that any modern product will have a particular effect on your skin.
How Warss Was Traditionally Used
- As a dye. Warss colours silk and cotton a golden orange. In Yemen it has been valued as a dye for generations.
- As a cosmetic. Plant reference works describe Warss as a cosmetic in Arabia, and a nineteenth-century pharmacy report describes it being sent to Yemen and Hadhramaut for use as a dye and a cosmetic.
- With water, as a lather. The same report describes users placing a little powder in the palm, moistening it with water, and rubbing the hands together to make a bright lather. It is a small detail, but it shows why Warss and a cleansing bar make such a natural pair.
Somewhere along the way, mainstream skincare moved on to synthetic foaming agents and heavy fragrance. We did not think that was a fair trade. So we brought Warss back in the form people use every day: a soap, an oil and a gel.
What Does Warss Do? An Honest Answer
This is the question most people really want answered, so here is a straight answer. Warss is a traditional ingredient with a long history, a mention in the Sunnah, and a place in traditional facial care. What science has measured is much more limited.
| Question | Evidence level | What we can say |
|---|---|---|
| Is Warss a traditional dye and cosmetic? | Well documented | Yes. Plant references describe its use as a dye and as a cosmetic in Arabia, Yemen, East Africa and India. |
| Was it used on the face in the Prophet's ﷺ time? | Hadith (hasan sahih) | Yes, according to the narration of Umm Salamah in Sunan Abi Dawud 311. |
| Does the plant contain interesting compounds? | Early (laboratory) | Laboratory work on Flemingia grahamiana leaf extracts has found chalcone compounds and antioxidant activity in lab tests. This is early research on the plant's leaves, not on this product. |
| Does Warss treat or cure a skin condition? | Not shown | No. We do not claim that Warss, or any Warss® product, treats, cures or prevents any skin condition. |

How to Use Warss® Facial Soap
It is very simple. One honest step, done consistently.
- Wet your face with clean water.
- Lather the bar between your palms until you have a soft foam.
- Massage gently onto your face in circular motions for 30 to 40 seconds. Avoid the eye area.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel.
- Follow up with a light layer of Warss® Aloe Vera Gel, and at night, a few drops of Warss® Facial Oil.
Tips
- Keep the bar on a draining soap dish so it dries between uses. A dry bar lasts longer, typically 4 to 6 weeks with daily use.
- Use lukewarm water, not hot. Very hot water can leave skin feeling tight.
- Be consistent for a few weeks before judging. Skin routines work best when they are simple and regular.
