Daily Hadith
Anas bin Malik (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "Before the Hour there shall be Fitan like a portion of the dark night. Morning will come upon a man as a believer, who will be a disbeliever in the evening, and evening will come upon a believer, who will be a disbeliever in the morning, people will sell their religion for goods of the world."
(Jami\` at-Tirmidhi 2197, Book 33, Hadith 40)
This is a profound hadith about the trials (Fitan) that will occur before the Day of Judgment. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is warning that a time will come when faith will be very unstable and constantly tested.
Meaning of the Hadith
“Before the Hour there shall be Fitan like a portion of the dark night…”
- Fitan means trials, confusion, chaos, moral corruption, and tests of faith.
- Dark night means extremely difficult and unclear—just like you cannot see direction in the darkness, people will struggle to know what is right or wrong.
“Morning will come upon a man as a believer, who will be a disbeliever in the evening…”
- Faith will become so fragile that a person may be strong in iman in the morning but lose it by night due to doubt, pressure, temptation, or sin.
- The fitnah will be so strong that belief will fluctuate rapidly.
“People will sell their religion for goods of the world.”
- People will abandon Islamic values for money, status, worldly gain, comfort, or fear.
- Examples in our time:
- Selling honesty for business profit
- Giving up modesty and halal rules for fame, job, or desire
- Choosing worldly lifestyle over prayer and obedience
- Supporting injustice for a political or economic advantage
- People changing their religion or principles because of influence or pressure
Why Will This Happen?
- Weak connection with Allah
- Influence of media and society normalizing sins
- Love of dunya over akhirah
- Misguiding leaders and false ideologies
- Lack of knowledge about Islam
How to Protect Ourselves
- Strong relationship with Qur’an and Sunnah
- Regular salah, dua, and repentance
- Good company and Islamic environment
- Staying away from doubtful things
- Trust in Allah and preparing for akhirah
Reflection
This hadith is telling us that we are living in times where:
- Truth becomes falsehood and falsehood becomes truth
- People change their beliefs easily
- The world becomes more important than faith
So we must hold firmly to our religion no matter how difficult it becomes.
Quranic Support
“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.”
(Surah Al-Imran 3:103)
