“The best things with which you change grey hair are henna and katam.”Prophet Muhammad ﷺ – Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1753 (Hasan Sahih); also Sunan Abi Dawud 4205 & Sunan Ibn Majah 3622
A Practice From the Prophetic Era, Not a Trend
Henna and katam were the dyes recommended for grey hair and were used by the Companions.
It was narrated from Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The best things with which you change gray hair are henna and Katam.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3622)
Anas bin Malik said: "When the Prophet (ﷺ) arrived at Medina, the eldest amongst his companions was Abu Bakr. He dyed his hair with Henna and Katam till it became of dark red color." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3920)

Buy the Katam & Henna DuoWhy Mix Katam With Henna?
Henna alone leaves hair orange-red. Katam adds the depth. Together they give a natural, warm brown without going to a harsh, flat black.
Henna on its own
A warm red-orange tone that conditions and coats the hair.
Katam added
Deepens the colour toward dark brown, so you control how dark you go.
Together
A fuller, richer reddish-brown that looks natural on grey and white hair.
Nothing synthetic
No ammonia, no PPD, no peroxide, no artificial black dye.
About the Henna You’ll Mix It With
The result depends a lot on the henna you pair with katam. Here is what to look for.
Choosing your henna powder
- Pure henna only. The ingredient list should say just henna (Lawsonia inermis). Avoid products with added dyes, metallic salts or “black henna”, which often contains PPD.
- Fresh, fine powder. Good henna is green to olive-green and smells grassy. Brown, dull or stale powder gives weaker colour.
- Finely sifted. A fine powder mixes into a smooth paste and rinses out more easily.
Preparing the henna first
Henna needs time to release its dye. Mix the henna powder alone with warm water (or a mildly acidic liquid such as diluted lemon juice or tea) into a thick, yoghurt-like paste. Cover and rest it for several hours or overnight at room temperature, until the surface darkens slightly. Add the katam just before you apply.
Why henna goes on first
Henna gives the red base tone and katam deepens it. Using both in one mixed paste works well. Applying henna on its own first, then katam, is a common alternative if you want to control the depth more precisely.
Pick Your Shade – Mixing Ratios
All measurements are by weight. Move toward more katam for a deeper colour.
Natural Brown
Softest, most natural look
Dark Brown
Balanced, best all-rounder
Deep Dark Brown
Fullest grey coverage
| Shade | If you use 100g katam, add henna | Total mix |
|---|---|---|
| Natural Brown (70 / 30) | about 233g | about 333g |
| Dark Brown (50 / 50) | 100g | 200g |
| Deep Dark Brown (30 / 70) | about 43g | about 143g |
Rough guide to how much total mix you need: short hair about 100g, shoulder-length about 200g, long hair 300g or more. Amounts vary with hair thickness.
How to Use It
Simple at-home method. Do a small test strand first to check your shade.
- Patch test. Apply a little paste behind the ear 24–48 hours before first use.
- Prepare the henna. Mix your henna with warm water into a paste and rest it as described above.
- Add the katam. Weigh out katam and henna using the ratio you chose, mix well, and add warm water gradually until the paste is smooth and yoghurt-like.
- Apply. Use gloves. Work through clean, dry, oil-free hair from roots to ends.
- Leave on. Longer processing gives a deeper tone. Start shorter on a test strand to judge your result.
- Rinse. Rinse with water until clear. Avoid shampooing for the first 24 hours so the colour can settle.
Who This Is For
For those who want to follow the Sunnah in caring for grey hair and prefer plant-based colour over ammonia and PPD dyes. Every time you apply it, you are following a practice recommended by the Prophet ﷺ.
Being honest with you: like all natural dyes, this colour fades gradually and is reapplied regularly. That is how the practice was always done, as a habit rather than a one-time treatment. If you want permanent, zero-maintenance colour, a chemical dye is a different product. If you want a natural, Sunnah-rooted option, this is it.
Good to Know Before You Order
- This listing includes katam powder only. You will need pure henna powder, available here, or buy both together in the Katam & Henna Duo.
- Your final shade depends on your starting hair colour, how much grey you have, your henna, processing time and how you apply it. Results vary from person to person.
- On dark or black hair this mix will not lighten the hair. It adds a brown or reddish tone, and shows most clearly on grey and white hair.
- Expect a warm reddish-brown, not the cool blue-black of indigo-based dyes.
- This is a natural, semi-permanent dye. Reapply regularly to maintain colour.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use katam without henna?
Katam is traditionally used together with henna. Henna provides the base colour and katam deepens it, so we recommend mixing the two.
Is henna included in this pack?
No. This pack contains 100g of katam powder only. You can buy our Henna Mehndi Powder separately, or get both together in the Katam & Henna Duo.
Is katam the same as indigo?
No, in results. Katam with henna gives a reddish-brown to dark brown tone, while indigo-based dyes lean cooler and blue-black.
Will this cover 100% of my grey hair?
Coverage depends on how much grey you have, your hair texture and the ratio you choose. A higher katam ratio generally gives deeper, fuller coverage on grey.
How long do I leave it on?
Longer processing generally gives a deeper tone. Test on a small strand first, then decide your time for a full application.
How often do I need to reapply?
Colour fades gradually, as with any natural dye. Reapply when you see grey regrowth or fading.
Is it safe for sensitive skin?
It contains only plant powder, but individual sensitivities exist. Always patch-test 24–48 hours before full use.
